Title: Violin
Artist: J. Galanis
Details: 2016. Acrylic on paper. 10.5 x 7 inches.
About: Shelves with colorful paint buckets lined Dennis' studio. But one set of shelves off to the side appeared bland at first glance. Rather than paint, they contained buckets of nanoparticles -- extremely tiny beads.
.
Occasionally, Dennis used these beads as a final detail that would add a subtle texture to a print.
.
As a team, Dennis would print a layer of paint, then I would dust nanoparticles over it. After the paint dried, we tapped off excess particles, and repeated the process until we felt like there was enough texture. Finally, Dennis would add one last layer of paint to seal it all in.
.
Just to be clear, you don't see beads, but rather hills produced by the particles and valleys where they're absent. This method really makes lines pop.
.
*Technically, this particular print doesn't contain nanoparticles. Instead, we used the paint stripping technique described here. The prints with nanoparticles have other great stories associated with them, so you'll see them later.
