Title: Nadav's Sorrow
Artist: J. Galanis
Details: 2016. Acrylic on paper. 8.875 x 11.75 inches.
About: I didn't realize that Dennis and I had completely different color pallets until I went to his studio. The most stressful question for both of us was, "What's the next color?"... and we rarely agreed.
.
I'd say blue; he'd say orange. I would point to a paint bucket on one of his shelves; he'd say it's not going to print the way I'm imagining. He'd repeat, "You can't dabble a color and see how it looks -- Printing is a plunge." I didn't have much experience, and he wanted to minimize catastrophes.
.
Dennis, the king of improvised solutions, suggested we consult the masters, and pulled out some reference books. We honed in on Gauguin (controversies surrounding this artist aside). We'd pick a painting that we both liked, and that would be our color guide.
.
This image is another woodcut-turned-screenprint, using similar methods described in a previous post. Color palette inspired by Gauguin's woodcut prints.
